On Today in Church His-Story (Episode 12) we discover how God turned a selfish plot for money and power into a widespread revival in Europe that we call the Protestant Reformation. The key players in this story were Pope Leo X, Albrecht of Magdeburg and Mainz, John Tetzel, and an obscure, but bold monk, Martin Luther. A false promise of salvation was peddled by Tetzel. Once Luther saw Tetzel was selling a false gospel, he posted his 95 Theses with righteous anger. These events sparked the greatest revival since Pentecost.
