The Consecration of Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury

On Today in Church His-Story (Episode 14) we trace the general history of the English Reformation and show the instrumental role that Thomas Cranmer played upon his consecration as Archbishop of Canterbury on March 30, 1533. This history takes us to the highlights of reform under King Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Elizabeth I. We also see once again that standing for truth comes at a high cost since we also reflect on Queen “Bloody Mary” and her seizure of the English throne in an attempt to reverse the English Reformation, which resulted in the martyrdom of Cranmer and others. Even still, we see how God’s sovereign fingerprints are all over this story in the eventual success of the English Reformation.
