The Signing of the Edict of Nantes and the Story Behind It

On Today in Church His-Story (Episode 16) we consider the circumstances surrounding the signing of the Edict of Nantes by King Henry IV of France. While King Henry IV signed the Edict as a politician, there was a theologian behind all of this. John Calvin created the necessary circumstances for the Edict coming into being through his efforts in training ministers at the Geneva Academy. It was Calvin’s love for the lost, in particular his native Frenchmen, that compelled him to dispatch many of these students back to France to preach the gospel. Some died as martyrs, but not before establishing thousands of churches resulting in the Edict of Nantes being signed as a means to accomplish religious toleration for Protestants in France
